Who is Alton Green?

Alton Green is a halfling chef and storyteller (bard), with a penchant for cooking monsters. He’s flamboyant, audacious, courageous, and… not always wise. Together with his husband, Narom, he owns and runs The Big Tavern, an establishment of reknown, with a menu often offering exotic, and monstrous, dishes.  Alton is the brain-child of a good friend, Adam, who played Alton in an ongoing D&D campaign for several years.  When the important question of “What would a cave troll taste like?” came up in a real-life discussion, we knew Alton was the perfect person to answer it! And thus the idea of Flavor Text Adventures was born.

What fantasy world is Flavor Text Adventures set in?

None, and all of them. When you read of Alton’s adventures, you’ll notice we keep world-building generally vague. This is quite on purpose! Our goal is to give you inspiring content that could easily fit into your own game, no matter what setting it may be.

Why a "Volume 1" instead of publishing the whole thing?

Flavor Text Adventures has published 26 individual chapters as PDF’s through our Patreon page between 2019-2022. To publish ALL the content we have in a physical book would mean a cumbersome tome of nearly 350 pages. This would not only be impractical and inconvenient for a cookbook, but also increases printing and shipping costs considerably, as well as delay fulfillment by additional time. We want to keep the funding goal as low as possible, and be able to focus on a smaller portion to make it as delicious as we can for you!

How large is the book going to be?

If only the initial funding goal is met (with none of the stretch goals for additional content), the book will have 6 chapters - each focused on one monster - to a total page count of roughly 72 pages. From there, the size will grow as stretch goals are unlocked, to a rough total of 120 pages. This does not include the “Flavor Text Adventure” module, which will be published as a separate PDF.

Why only book rewards? Where are all the bells and whistles?

To put simply: Costs. We know you’ve come to expect a lot of extras from Kickstarters. Other campaigns for similarly themed books offer lots of additional physical goods: plates, aprons, glasses, dice, etc. and the list goes on and on!  Unfortunately, all those things require a ton of additional work and costs (such as design, sourcing, shipping etc.) and as we stated above, for this first campaign we’d like to keep the funding goals as practical and realistic as possible. We also know that the content of Flavor Text Adventures speaks for itself, and we dont need to dazzle you with shiny baubles to hype you about it! That said, we are not above it. Shiny baubles are lovely, and we have some plans for future campaigns.

Do you have plans for future volumes?

Absolutely! We structured this first volume in a way that would give you a great collection and variety of monsters, and also a balance between stories, recipe difficulty (including at least one vegetarian and one dessert), and gaming content. But we also wanted to leave enough for equally awesome and just as balanced future volumes!  Assuming success in this first campaign, we are planning on a total of 3 or 4 volumes overall, which include all 26 chapters we’ve already published and at least 4-6 entirely new, never-before-seen chapters. On the final volume, we want to include a nice slip case that would contain all the volumes together. We’d also like to create full fledged modules based on Alton’s adventures, written by some of the best writers in the industry. And remember those shiny baubles we mentioned? We have ideas. Lots of them. Too many, probably! So if this first campaign is a success, we will likely offer some extras when the second one comes around.

Do you use AI generated art or text?

Nope. Never. Read our lips: It will never, EVER, happen! In the great words of J.R.R Tolkien: “We put the thought of all the we love in to all that we make.”  All of our team are creatives with decades of experience, from writers, to artists, chefs, designers… we all worked very hard for a very long time to develop our skills. We pour our hearts and souls into every creation and take pride in it. We hope you would too!

Is everyone working on the project getting paid fairly?

We sure think so. We pay everyone better-than-industry-rates for the work they do, and we do it promptly. Everyone also gets fully credited for their work, our contracts are designed to support creatives and their rights, and we aim for win-win working relationships!

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
